Textile design for conscious and colourful living.

Dakin Designs has been born out of a love of experimenting with colour, pattern and texture. And a desire to make useful, sustainable and beautiful products to have and to hold - or pass on, encouraging reuse and a reduction in waste.

Having moved to Wales in 2019 I am ever more inspired by the forms and colours provided by nature, and these give me the starting points for all my designs.

We know the world needs far less ‘stuff,’ but as humans we are still drawn to beautiful objects, yet they need to have function and be made in a way that has the smallest footprint on the world around us. It is this desire to create, but also the need to produce products that seem relevant in our culture today that I have come up with my first product which is reusable fabric wrapping for presents.

The Fabric wrapping of gifts stems from a Japanese tradition, they are called furoshiki, or fukusa for more formal and important gifts. I was looking into getting wrapping paper made, yet it always seems so wasteful to rip these beautiful papers, then most of the time they just get discarded-straight to the rubbish. My Fabric Wrapping is made from organic cotton satin which gives it a luxurious sheen, using cotton that hasn’t been sprayed with chemicals which are so harmful to the environment. A digital printer is used to print the fabric, which minimises the consumption of water, energy and chemical substances.

There are eight beautifully colourful, geometric designs to choose from, plus matching gift cards printed on recycled paper. The idea is that Fabric Wrapping can be used again and again, passing from person to person and each time is a gift in itself.
